World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) 2025 China Summer School Opens at East China University of Political Science and Law Recognition

On June 30, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) 2025 China Summer School opened at East China University of Political Science and Law. Yu Chen, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Intellectual Property Bureau, Luo Peixin, Party Committee Member and Vice President of East China University of Political Science and Law, and Deng Yuhua, Advisor of the WIPO China Office attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches.

Yu Chen pointed out that talent is a strategic advantage for Shanghai’s development, the first resource for the development of the intellectual property cause, and a key support for building an intellectual property strong city. The joint hosting of the WIPO China Summer School is an important outcome of the deepening cooperation between the Shanghai Municipal Government and WIPO in cultivating intellectual property talent. As the first WIPO summer school to be established in China, East China University of Political Science and Law has firmly grasped the strategic opportunity of national intellectual property talent cultivation, fully utilized its professional expertise and resource advantages, and has trained 667 intellectual property talents with international vision and cross-cultural communication skills for more than 30 countries. The Huazheng Summer School project has become a benchmark platform for international talent cultivation.

Luo Peixin stated that as a significant base for intellectual property education in China, East China University of Political Science and Law possesses abundant academic resources and an outstanding teaching team. Adhering to an internationalized educational philosophy, it focuses on cultivating high-level, interdisciplinary, and international intellectual property professionals. This summer school will further refine its efforts in diversifying teaching themes, internationalizing the faculty team, and normalizing practical training.

Deng Yuhua stated that digital technologies, represented by artificial intelligence, are profoundly transforming the world while also bringing new challenges such as data rights and governance frameworks. In the current global innovation landscape, there is a gap between developed and developing countries in terms of accessing knowledge, technology, and participating in green innovation. WIPO is committed to actively promoting global policy coordination, continuously strengthening judicial cooperation and capacity building, and plays a core role in fostering international cooperation. The WIPO Summer School is an important platform for cultivating international innovation leaders.

The Wuhan Summer School program attracted 141 participants from 21 countries, including Egypt, Poland, Peru, France, South Korea, etc., with 113 Chinese students and 28 international students, setting a new record for participation. The program engaged 30 experts from the Shanghai Intellectual Property Bureau, WIPO, the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce Arbitration Institute of Sweden, the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition in Germany, the Supreme People’s Court, the Higher People’s Court of Shanghai, Tsinghua University, and Peking University. Focusing on topics such as artificial intelligence governance, international dispute resolution of intellectual property, and administrative and judicial protection of intellectual property, the program combined classroom learning with practical activities to comprehensively and deeply assist students in understanding Chinese and foreign intellectual property rules and tracking the latest developments in the field of intellectual property.
